If you're getting ready to move, or need to store some items away, you'll need to find the right storage unit. Storage units are found in most towns, but not all of them have heated units. If you have the following items, you might want to consider storing them in a temperature-controlled unit.  

Furniture Items

When it comes to protecting your furniture, keeping it at a consistent temperature helps keep it intact longer. If it gets too cold and then warm temperatures spike, it can create unwanted moisture buildup. This, in turn, can cause the fabric and wood to produce mold and mildew, damaging the piece and creating an unwanted musty smell. If you have mattresses, chairs, and other furniture, consider renting a heated storage unit. Because temperature fluctuations can cause swelling of wood, keeping furniture at a consistent temperature will reduce things like fabric breakdown and wood warping. 

Artwork or Painted Items

Items painted on canvas or other oil-painted items are very vulnerable to color-run and material breakdown. Fluctuating temperatures can cause delicate pieces to fall apart or lose their original luster. This also includes printed photographs. Making sure these items are packed properly and stored in a heated unit will prevent significant damage. Keeping them in a dry, heated unit with adequate airflow will help keep them in their original state. Talk to the storage unit employees to make sure you get the right unit to safely store your painted prints and other fine pieces of art. This will ensure they will remain safe and secure. 

Important Documents and Paper Items

Placing paper items or important legal documents in regular storage may seem like a safe bet, but use caution. If they are in a unit where temps fluctuate, they are susceptible to ink bleeds and fading. They are also prone to paper breakdown, which can cause documents to warp and break down, especially if they get a lot of moisture buildup. Consider a heated or temperature-controlled storage unit. This will help keep papers in pristine condition and reduce the risk of moisture exposure and permanent damage to the paper pieces.

There are several items that can be stored in a heated storage unit. Anything that is prone to moisture exposure or could break easily due to material breakdown should not be placed in a traditional storage unit. If you live in a climate where temps fluctuate greatly, a heated unit is the answer.
