Best time to visit Port Angeles & Olympic National Park

For your first Olympic trip, choose July through September for mountain views, lake walks and the coast. Spring and fall suit a slower forest-and-waterfall visit.

Our first-visit choice: July through September

July through September is our first-visit recommendation for combining the high country, lake and coast. Reserve popular rooms early and save your clearest day for Hurricane Ridge. Summer weather still brings clouds and changing mountain conditions.

Choose May, June or October for a forest-and-coast focus, with high-country visits fitted around road and weather conditions. Winter has shorter days and restricted mountain operations. NPS seasonal planning information explains the busy summer period.

01 · Choose your season

Summer: the widest range of park days

Summer is the strongest all-round choice for mountain viewpoints, lake walks and a multi-region trip. It is also the busiest period at popular entrances and parking areas. Book your overnight route ahead and start early at the most popular stops.

Balance the mountain and rainforest days with a Lake Crescent afternoon or waterfront evening. Staying in the right region cuts the time spent retracing the same roads.

02 · Choose your season

Spring: waterfalls and forest walks

Spring puts waterfalls and low-elevation forest walks at the center of the trip. Build around Lake Crescent, Elwha and the rainforest, then add Hurricane Ridge when the road and trail conditions allow.

Match seasonal lodge stays, pool sessions and transport to their opening calendars. A forest-based itinerary gives you a strong trip before the full summer high-country season.

03 · Choose your season

Fall: coast days and comfortable town evenings

Fall suits a slower forest-and-coast trip, with evenings back at a comfortable base. Put long drives in daylight and book seasonal tours or lodge stays around their closing dates.

For a Port Angeles stay, group the northern outings together. Add a western overnight when Hoh and several beaches are the focus.

04 · Choose your season

Winter: a different kind of Olympic trip

Winter brings snow to the high country and a quieter, lower-elevation focus elsewhere. Mountain-road openings are restricted and weather dependent, with additional vehicle requirements. Use the day’s road status before traveling toward Hurricane Ridge.

Plan waterfront time, indoor stops and suitable forest walks into the trip. Seasonal snowshoe outings depend on access; book them around the operator’s current schedule.

05 · Choose your season

Match the room to the trip

Downtown Port Angeles gives you restaurants and local departures throughout a town-based stay. Choose a seasonal lake room for time beside the water, or Forks for repeated western outings. Our area guide connects those choices to the route.

Start with the landscape you most want to see. Summer serves a broad first visit; the forest and coast give spring and fall their own appeal.
