01 · The park, made manageable

Understand the shape of the park

Olympic has a mountainous interior, separate river valleys and a Pacific coastal strip. Roads reach each region from the perimeter; there is no road across the mountain center. Group your days by region to spend more time on trails and shores.

Start in Port Angeles for Hurricane Ridge. Continue west past Lake Crescent and Sol Duc, then use Forks for the Hoh Rain Forest and Pacific beaches. That sequence forms the backbone of a northern-to-western trip.

02 · The park, made manageable

Choose two or three landscapes

With two days, make Hurricane Ridge and Lake Crescent your priorities. You get mountain viewpoints, old-growth forest and lakeshore time from a single Port Angeles base. With a third or fourth day, add Hoh, the coast and a western overnight.

Spend the extra time on the parts you enjoy most: a longer forest walk, an afternoon beside the lake or a Sol Duc pool session. Our sample itineraries show a route for each trip length.

03 · The park, made manageable

Split your base when you head west

Port Angeles combines northern park access with restaurants and supplies. Forks shortens the journeys to the Hoh and Pacific beaches. Use our base comparison to decide where to move for the western part of the trip.

For an evening beside the water, choose Lake Crescent Lodge. Its seasonal lake setting suits a slower overnight between the northern park and the drive west; Port Angeles offers a wider dining choice.

04 · The park, made manageable

Choose self-driving or a local guide

Drive yourself for flexible trail time and the freedom to change overnight bases. Book a local guide for naturalist interpretation and transport from Port Angeles. Our three park tours cover a mountain-and-waterfall day, a rainforest-and-coast day and a shorter forest outing.

Use current NPS road and trail information when finalizing your route. Arrange park admission, accommodation and any timed activities alongside your travel dates.
